From the start of this project it was in the back of our minds to map the border between Finland and Estonia, as it seemed to be of such a different order than the borders we already included in the research: geographical, cultural, economic. Having found a partner in the Aalto University we were able to perform BCA’s over there! With a small but dedicated group of students we prepared, took the ferry and off we went. Various difficulties showed up: where actually is the border when you’re on a boat? When do you ‘leave’ one country and ‘enter’ the other? What about the time on the ferry? All the amusement offered on board turned the crossing into a feast for the senses. We perceived it both as an attempt to mask or erase the border crossing, which takes a bit more than two hours, as a celebration of it.
